Minutes from the January 25th UPHA Board Meeting Present: Joe Boisvert, April Norris, Joy Haas, Mary Lin McBride, Donna Bailey, Mahan Kick, Marie Vedetta Joe Boisvert presided
Mahan presented the treasurer’s report. We had two new members and one payment. Mahan reported that we are holding our own and will meet our expected budget. The treasurer’s report was approved by the board.
April Norris reported at the neighborhood roundtable that Adryon Clay is acquiring multiple lots on Parker Street that adjoins property she owns on Oberlin Rd. Donna is going to contact Thomas Crowder to see what the zoning limits are there. She also reported an increase in older kids hanging out during the day. Joe will contact Officer Barbie Upchurch to see if there has been any increase in criminal activity. April also reported that UPHA on Facebook has 53 friends so far.
Old Business: Joy Haas proposed the membership letter be sent out to new neighbors. A draft letter was passed around for the signatures of board members. Joy will contact Louise Griffin to get an updated list of new neighbors to send the letter to. Mary Lin reported that the 3 vacant positions on the board will be filled by David Brown, Secretary, Lori Hall, VP of Real Estate and Janice Odom, At-Large board member. She will also send April the Candidate Application to be posted to the myupha website for board access only.
Final plans for the February 8th Joe Boisvert has arranged dinner for the meeting with Amore’s. April will bring salad and salad dressing. Joy Haas will bring tea. Marie, Donna, Mary Lin and Joe will bring dessert. Milt will be presenting a year in review, Mahan will present the treasurer’s report, and the elections will be held. The need for someone to be at the door was stressed. Mary Lin will also have short biographies for the tables so people can learn about the new board members.
Donna Bailey gave an update on Isabella Cannon Park. UPHA will host the 30% Design review to be held at the Brooks Ave Church of Christ on Tuesday, Feb 23rd at 7 pm. This will the final opportunity to view the plans before construction begins. Joe Boisvert reported that he and Paul Blankinship had met with the new owner of the former Aurora Lounge. The new owner is Paul Weil and the new name is the Pack House Pub. Joe feels he has good intentions to work with the neighborhood.
Joe also said that Porter’s is moving ahead with expanding upstairs since the Hillsborough St renovations seem to be slightly ahead of schedule. The owner of the Barrel Monster doesn’t want the icon. Joe is going to contact the Hillsborough St Businesses to see if another business would like to have it. Possible future parking solutions was tabled until after Hillsborough Street is complete. The East Village is holding a Neighborhood Appreciation Event on Sunday, January 31st from 2-4 and providing free hot dogs and burgers.
New Business April Norris is going to contact the current advertisers to see if they would renew their ads on the UPHA website. Mary Lin McBride suggested UPHA host a support station for the Race for the Cure Race that travels though our neighborhood every year. She has provided water in the past. Mary Lin said she would be happy to organize this. Mahan Kick also suggested that we try to organize a UPHA team to run the race. Leza Mundt (in an e-mail) had requested an annual neighborhood clean-up be organized. Donna Bailey suggested coordination with the Park Scholars who do a day of service in the spring. It was suggested that Janice Odom may be able to help with that. The next meeting will be at Joe Boisvert’s house on Monday, February 22nd. The new time to meet is 7:30.
